Running for the Children's

A review of the Miami Children's Hospital 5K

Unofficial time 47.00 minutes
This morning my husband, sister and I ran (mostly walked) the Miami Children's Hospital 5K.  This was my first non-disney run, so I was pretty excited and anxious to see how "normal" runs are. We left the house about 5 minutes after I originally planned to leave - which proved to be a HUGE mistake. If you have ever lived in my neck of the woods, you know the difference just 5 minutes can make. We arrived at the race around 7:00 a.m. and then spent the next 22 minutes STUCK in the parking garage.

There were no parking attendants and no one to say "Garage Full' ... So,... myself and about 50 other cars were stuck in a garage (not moving - due to the traffic OUTSIDE of the garage). We finally made it out of the garage and into the second parking option at about 7:35...

Two problems.

1) The race started at 7:30 a.m.
2) We were about a 1/2 a mile away from the starting line. ...

We rushed over to the race and my darling sister says. ...

"I have to use the bathroom" ...

As i'm standing there WAITING (impatiently) the announcer announces to the crowd (a.k.a. ME!) "You have to get started or your time will not be recorded, we are changing the set up for finishers". At that moment I gave up all hope of starting the race through the balloons and waited for my team.

As we started the race, I was then promptly honked at by a car (which happened to be the pace car) because ... the top 3 finishers were finishing. [whatever - no big deal]

Since we started soooo late (like 7:45) we were behind ALL of the strollers and children so it was a little challenging to run. So, we walked and jogged a little to get around big crowds of strollers.
According to my Nike+ app, we maintained 15 minute miles.
After the race we got to walk around and get free stuff from the sponsors. Sister was very excited about the cotton candy.

I was a little more excited about the "cool off zone"

According to a post of Facebook, there were 3,500 people there. However, I for a fact know that that number cannot be true.

Why you ask?

Krispy Kreme.

After the race we decided to go grab a yummy snack of Krispy Kreme doughnuts. While waiting in line a gentleman asked my how I won my medal. Of course I was more than willing to tell him about it when half way through my story about the race he cuts me off and says "WAS THAT TODAY?! - I REGISTERED FOR THAT AND FORGOT TO GO!" This poor man spent the next 10 minutes explaining how he registered so long ago because a friend asked him too and he can't believe he forgot to go! Upon leaving he says to me "Thanks for ruining my day" ... When I laughed and said "No problem!" he smiled and said "be blessed" ... So, I'm pretty sure I didn't ruin his day.

Sorry facebook I'm pretty sure there were only 3,499 people there. :)

Anyways... at Krispy Kreme, we were given the gift of coffee in honor of Free Coffee day.

It was a great day!

Livin' la vida sporty!

I've been so busy being me, that I totally forgot to announce my big news!

You are looking at the *NEW* Girls Gone Sporty Fitness Ambassador!

I feel so honored and blessed to networked with so many inspiring women.  I find myself laughing, crying, giggling and ... well INSPIRED when I read the blogs and stories of the other Ambassadors. It wasn't until recently that I actually thought of myself as someone worthy of being an ambassador for something such as FITNESS!  Let's be honest, if you are going to stand for something - you better practice what you preach (just saying).

"Courage is found in unlikely places" - Tolkien

One afternoon at work, I was talking to my favorite beauty queen about running, walking and hating my Jillian workouts. After the conversation that felt like two seconds - but was probably like 10 minutes  conversation, I felt inspired to share my story. I'd already been active on my blog (mostly for my own encouragement) and twitter so really being an ambassador was a   logical next step. ... right?

Fear. of. Rejection. ...

I applied on a Friday afternoon, I was pretty excited about Girls Gone Sporty and a couple of my twitter peeps were ambassadors. So, I took the plunge and applied.

Timing is everything, and apparently. ... I applied RIGHT when Laura was reviewing applications. On Sunday morning, I woke up to a VERY happy email from Girls Gone Sporty.

I was accepted.

I've enjoyed reading everyone's stories, and learning about fitness and running. I've enjoyed connecting with people from ALL over.  This has been a wonderful adventure and I'm looking forward to where the journey leads.

We are finally just days away from our next race! When we registered in June, September felt SO far away. I'm really proud of how far I've come with my running. Seriously, I never thought i'd be here.

I'm really looking forward to running with my love.

Another thing I'm looking forward too ...

My little SISTER is coming to my house! Not only is my sister coming to my house, she is going to run in the 5K with me and super hunk (my hubs).  I'm so excited, and proud of her!

She's an Olympian ... (well. ... not really, she just went to the Olympics!)

Working Late? Work OUT!

If you follow my twitter feed you probably saw that I'm stuck at work late tonight while Mr. Handsome works late tonight...

Not wanting to sit and wait and wait and wait while he worked I packed my running gear and an extra snack for the evening.

5:00 p.m. Finally came and I changed into my workout gear!

*tut tut it looks like rain*

I didn't feel like getting stuck in the rain... So I opted for a work out in the parking garage!

The 36 Hour Vacation

Depart for Universal Studios, Florida at 5:00 a.m. Saturday morning
Arrive home at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday evening.

My husband and I have the reputation of always running away for the weekend, or being spontaneous. The fact is, we just really enjoy being together - away from everyone else. The vacations aren't as spontaneous as people think. We actually do plan and budget for them, we just don't really announce it that much until BOOM we are gone!

The parks were not very crowded and it was hot enough to go on the water ride sooo..... It was pretty much amazing!  It was fun to be out with my hubby.

The worst part of the trip was ...

 - eating at a restaurant that was empty ... Seriously, if you are in Orlando (the biggest tourist city in Florida) and there is a restaurant that has NO customers... you should probably trust your gut and leave.

The BEST part of the trip. ...
Well, I can't decide between the two following:
1) Krispee Kreme Donuts
2) Meeting Petey from Little Rascals!!

When I was in the 8th grade, Little Rascals was my FAVORITE movie.

Sooo... Meeting Petey was a pretty big deal!

My exact words "good thing I did my hair today" ...

Yeah, that last part is a little embarrassing - but true!

Weekly chase -mobile post

I apologize in advance. I'm typing this on my lunch break using my iPhone. There may be some serious typos on this post!! :)

Happy News!
I posted about hitting a plateau the other day... (Boo) I'm happy to report that since that post I have lost 3 pounds!!

What did I do differently?
1) Rest more
2) drink more water
3) start 5 am workouts
4) fitness yoga (twice)
5) vacation (a.k.a. I upped my caloric intake)

I'm starting to think I wasn't eating enough because two of those pound were lost during my theme park vacation!

What am I chasing this week?

1) log calories on myfitnesspal (follow me "fofosbride")
2) yoga 3 times
3) walk 5 mornings
4) participate in the Miami Children's 5k
5) don't drink my calories!!

There you have it! My goals for the week!! :)

What are you chasing?

Pinterest Tested: Overcoming the Plateau!

Last night my husband and I set up our brand new scale. We were very excited about the scale because it measures your body fat and hydration level. After dinner (Okay, that was the worst idea ever), we weighed ourselves. I knew roughly my percentage of body fat. However, my love was not aware.

Shocked at his results, he established morning walks and full breakfasts. In addition, he also established a bed time. (Okay, I kind of died laughing a little because i'm pretty sure I've never actually had an "established bedtime").
I was very impressed with us - we did not hit the snooze.

In order to help us beat the plateau, I've been reading up again. Water, water, water,... Rest, Rest, Rest, Rest. Don't eat garbage! ... Yeah, that's about all I've read (information I've read before).

I did find this on Pinterest though. It was a colorful display of some great information.

How about you, how do you beat a plateau?

Weekly Chase

Weekly Chase Update!

Last week

Goal 1: Continue #Squatsept challenge. - Accomplished!

Goal 2: Make #plankaday a part of my daily routine. - Accomplished!

Goal 3:  Begin a weekly walking tradition with a friend. - tried... It was pouring so our plans were canceled.

Goal 4: Run at least 4 days. - Nope. Only did 3 days.

Goal 5: Complete Jillian Michaels Arms workout twice. - Didn't do Jillian Michaels workouts. BUT I did work on my arms twice! (does that count?)

Thanks to Pinterest, I am able to find so many quick and fun workouts online. I always laugh when I see memes like this one. ...
I only laugh because it is so true! I've decided the it's time to actually try some of them. After i've tried it, I will post about it. I'll post the good, the bad and the results!

Tonight (9/15/12) I wanted to do some work on my legs. Obviously Victoria Secret Models have nice legs so clearly it was a no-brainer!

I dedicated 10 minutes of my evening to this workout.

It was so hard! My booty and legs were burning!! As Jillian would advise, "when you think you are going to die, keep going! That's when changes are made". So, I kept going and YOU should too! This was a quick 10 minute workout that will strengthen your legs.
Comment below to let me know what you think!

Leaky Toilets and Dreams of Roller Coasters.

Last night signaled the end of Summer for our Youth Group. After a three month break, In His Sight is back! The Kick off Cook Out was a huge success and my husband and I celebrated by sitting in the back of our truck at chapel and holding hands talking about the evening.

What worked, what did work? What was the best moment of the night?

I'm sure it would have been a lot more romantic if we weren't parked under a light [not that I think we would have been able to see stars in our hometown anyway].

Our final words before drifting off into sleep were "I want to ride roller coasters tomorrow". Since we have year passes to Universal Studios, we often have this conversation. Sadly, I didn't get to go ride roller coasters, or drink frozen moose juice. Instead, we packed up the puppies and took a little trip to Ace Hardware to purchase a new flapper.  After Ace, we went to Pet Supermarket to pick out new harnesses for the poochies. Romeo and Juliet will now be sporting Green and Brown Polka Dotted Harnesses.  [I'm not sure Romeo is impressed].

After taking the twins shopping, we took them to the dog park for an afternoon walk. I put on my new playlist and walked, played with my doggies and made new friends until it was simply too hot to continue walking.  It was a nice simple exercise for a hot (fall) afternoon.
When we got home, we fixed the toilet did a little strength training and relaxed together as a family.  Overall, it was a great day. I'd have really enjoyed seeing the word upside down, and chillin' with Harry - but an afternoon with my husband and dogs is just as fun at home as in Orlando.

What did you do that was fun today?

Time getcha getcha getcha head in the game. ...

Today is the day! My husband is helping me make a play list for my #rundisney training. I'm very excited for my upcoming (in February) 1/2 Marathon! I can't believe I'm actually training for a 1/2 marathon.

What Disney songs make it into your training playlist?

...Is Glitter Professional?

This week has been an exciting week in my professional world. We had an amazing event, and I was so proud to be a part of it. Although my piece was small, I felt honored to be a part of our awesome team. As you can imagine, I needed to dress extra professional for the event (so of course, I had to go shopping).

Saturday, I walked into a store, saw a shirt and sweater on the model and said "I want to buy that" - I tried it on, felt great so I BOUGHT it! I couldn't wait until the event!

Reasons for excitement.

1) I had recently outgrown that store. Sadly, I had gained so much weight that the largest size wouldn't fit me. I was SO excited to be able to fit into the clothes in that store again.

2) I've never actually purchased an outfit displayed!

*pats herself on the back*

[I know what you are thinking, what does this have to do with glitter?]

The night before the event I sat down to paint my nails. I turned on netflix, and began to paint my nails a nice soft white color.

All finished. ...

And then, I pulled out the glitter.

Like a crazy person, I painted my nails with hot pink and gold glitter.

I had completely forgotten what I was doing.

No big deal right? Just take it off. ...

Did I mention we are out of nail polish remover!!!

Sooo, I was able to get the glitter nail polish completely off and decided to just go with bare nails.

I personally felt pretty yesterday. Hopefully not too many people noticed my bare nails. :)

Also, I'm very proud of my poochies. I didn't have to carry them home from our 2.5 mile walk/jog tonight!

Be thankful.

In April of 2011 my husband and I went with several friends to dinner. During dinner, I choked on a piece of steak. Through a series of unfortunate and embarrassing events I ended up in the ER for a few hours until I was able to remove the piece of steak that was lodged in my throat.

Less than a week later, my husband was rushed from urgent care to the hospital for removal of his appendix. I remember this time in our marriage because it was a time when I realized HOW blessed I am. I wouldn't wish these experiences on any marriage. However, I am thankful for those experiences because I truly believe those days helped strengthen our marriage.

The other day, my husband surprised me by taking me out to dinner. (Side note - every single day of our marriage, I have asked my husband to take me to dinner). SO, I was VERY happy!

Anyways, during dinner I seem to have done it again. Upon eating a piece of chicken, ... I got it stuck. I excused myself to the restroom and tried to get it out. However, when nothing was coming (pardon the yuckiness) I thought that maybe it was just an upset stomach. After we got home, I continued to feel like something was wrong. Finally, ... I was able to remove the chicken. (no ER this time!)

Why did I take the time share this?

Because it reminded me to take time to be thankful.

It reminded me to take my time in the small things (like chewing), and be thankful for the many people in my life who love me. I'm thankful for my husband for holding my hair and not barfing with me. I'm thankful for my mom who took my phone call (after the fact) and listening to me tell my story. There are so many things I am thankful for. Now had TWO experiences with choking I'm seriously considering a juice diet.

Anyone know any good juice recipes?

... just kidding. I'll learn to chew my food and pay attention to what i'm doing!

The Weekly Chase!

I'd like to take this opportunity to tell you that chasing my goals this week proved to be SO difficult. I didn't realize how hard it would be to stay accountable to my goals.  I'm looking forward to another week of training and loving my life.

Read More about the #weeklychase here!

How did I do?

Goal 1: Complete week two of my Princess Half Training. This will include running on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. I trained on Tuesday. However, due to several late nights at work I wasn't able to 1) drag myself in the morning or 2) run in the evening when I returned.

Goal 2:  Continue the #Squatsept challenge. During this challenge, you are supposed to add 5 squats to your routine every day. Example: Monday = 5, Tuesday = 10 ... I have chosen to do my squats with a v-raise (Jillian Michaels taught me that!) Accomplished! I'm so proud of myself, I wasn't able to run all my scheduled runs but I was able to keep up with this challenge.

Goal 3: Continue to do the #plankaday, push myself to build my time each day. Accomplished (mostly). I say mostly, because EVERY day I got a little better except today (Sunday).

So, there you have it! I did okay with my goals. However, I am looking forward to next week.

Goal 1: Continue #Squatsept challenge.

Goal 2: Make #plankaday a part of my daily routine.

Goal 3:  Begin a weekly walking tradition with a friend.

Goal 4: Run at least 4 days.

Goal 5: Complete Jillian Michaels Arms workout twice.

So, there you have it! The 5 goals I'm chasing this week!

What are you  chasing?

My First Weekly Chase!

Here we go, I've been following the #weeklychase on a couple of blogs and have been quite inspired by these ladies.  I hope the successes and (hopefully not too many) failures inspire others to dust off those sneakers and exercise!

My Love Story

Wedding Website

After being prompted by Mindy, I'm going to officially blog some of my love story.

After much prayer, and consult from the leadership at our home assembly my mom and dad made the decision to leave secular employment and go into the full time ministry. My dad just finished his Masters in Biblical Studies from Dallas Theological Seminary, and my sister had just graduated from high school.  I'll never forget moving to camp. I remember being excited, and I remember being nervous about our future life.

It was May of 2000.

Even though I lived at a summer camp in Florida, I had already made plans to volunteer at a camp in North Carolina. A couple of us Floridians all rode together with "Mr. Nelson & Vivian" to camp. Picture 3 girls (loud, hyper & excited), 1 extremely quiet boy with a big eyes, a yellow visor and his beloved Third Day CD collection crammed into a car for 12+ hours.

When we finally made it to North Carolina you can imagine how excited we were.

During the Summer of 2000, Chris and I became inseparable. He was my favorite person to talk to (and about) we were the best of friends. We spent the next 6 summers serving the Lord at camp every summer and emailing and calling each other non-stop during the year! When we first started our relationship I didn't even have a cell phone (neither did he) we would ask our parents for phone cards (when you go to camp, you need a phone card to call long distance home). However, we never used them to call home. We would save them to call each other (such rebels I know).

In  December of 2006, I had finished my Associates Degree at my local community college and had been accepted to Florida International University in Miami. So, on the 6th of January 2007, I moved to Miami to pursue my degree in Early Childhood Education.

Finally, after 6 years of a long distance relationship, we lived in the same city. Over the next two years, I finished my degree and of course fall in love with Chris.

March 2008 at The Brown Derby in Disney's Hollywood Studios he FINALLY asked me to marry him. Within a matter of seconds, the date was confirmed. We were to be married 5 days after our graduation.

At 12:20 p.m. on December 20th I walked down the isle with my daddy (sobbing).
At 12:42 p.m. I skipped back up the isle (giggling) with my husband.

I'm pretty sure I offended some people by dancing back down the isle, but honestly... I really didn't care.

I now live in Miami, Florida with my husband and two rat terriers (Romeo and Juliet).

What's your love story?

Friday & The Labor Day Weekend 5-Miler

Yesterday, I completely fell off the eating healthy wagon. The day started well. I got up, drank a protein shake and prepared myself to go to my consultation at the (2nd) Oral Surgeon. After leaving the Doctors office, ... we stopped at McDonald's (I will not deny, I enjoyed my chicken nuggets). By the time I got to work it was almost time for a pre-event tasting. ... Seriously, we ate some delicious foods! So, after all that  food you'd think that I would take it easy for dinner right?
ahem ... not so much!

1 September 2012
My grandmother in law LOVES Pizza! Specifically, Pizza Hut Pizza! (Hello Grease.) She recently had knee surgery and has been recovering very well (seriously, she's incredible - I asked her if she should be walking, and she [in a very offended tone] replied with, Yes, I'm allowed to move). Anyways, my Mother in law told her that when she felt up to it, the whole family would come over and eat some Pizza Hut. Abuela's response "Okay, I feel better tomorrow night" ... So, on Friday night. I had Pizza and Cheesecake with my in-laws!

Saturday, I knew I HAD to make some healthier choices, and get a good work out in I needed to burn up some calories, and flush my body with water, water, water!!

I was so excited when I found another Virtual Race on Twitter! Thank you Laura (@Mommyrunfaster) for hosting the Labor Day 5 & 10. The longest I have ever run is 4 miles, so I didn't think 5 miles would be a problem. However, I think I went a little too late in the day. When I returned, I was so weak and dehydrated that I lacked the energy to even fix myself a glass of water. When I checked the weather I saw it was 92 degrees ... Yeah, that would explain my desire to pass out!

Hydration from the Hulk!
My husband quickly got me a glass of water, and stayed with my until my body cooled down. Not going to lie, it was a little scary.  My time was 1 hour and 25 minutes, that translated into 17 minute miles. I was getting so frustrated with myself because I just couldn't run! So I walked as fast as I could. Now that I know how hot it was - I understand why my body just wouldn't move.  I'm proud that I accomplished the 5 miles. Next time, I will plan a little better. Especially since I'm not used to running in the daytime.

Did you participate in a run this weekend?

Is Robert is Here really the Disney World of Fruit Stands?

After your visit to the Everglades National Park in Homestead, you are not  going to want to miss Robert is Here.   Located not too far fro...
