Twenty Twelve.

As the light of my last Christmas candle for the year is burning out, I am reminiscing about 2012 and the adventures I had.  No, I didn't make any career moves. No, I didn't start a family. No, I didn't find a way to never have a huge pile of laundry that needs to be folded (Seriously, how do people keep up with laundry?) I went on a journey to be a better Erin. I made a commitment to make better choices and to spend more time with the man I love most (Chris).

It all started with a Facebook picture.  The New Years festivities had ended, and the photos began to be uploaded.  Horrified at the way I looked, I asked my husband if he would start walking with me. He agreed, and we walked.  (My weight loss journey will be featured on a fellow Girls Gone Sporty bloggers site, so I won't get into the details right now).   Here is the picture that started it all.  I. looked. horrible!

Why did I post it?

I have been debating my decision to post this picture for quite a while. I didn't WANT to put it on the internet for all to see. However, I feel that it is an important part of my journey. If this candid shot hadn't woken me up who KNOWS where I'd be. So, ... here you go. This is probably the worst photo of me (ever).

Even though it is the worst photo of life, it inspired me to make small changes (like walking) and just look at some of the things I was able to accomplish. ..

By making small changes every day, I was able to:

1) Complete multiple 5K's
2) Complete a 10K
3) Host a Sporty birthday party
4) Lose over 50 pounds in 11 months
5) Connect with so many inspiring women
6) Strengthen my relationship with my love
7) Register and train for a HALF MARATHON!!

My list could go on and on and on but I won't. If you follow me on Twitter / Instagram you already KNOW what's up!

Here I am in late December.
I'm not where I should be, but I'm happy with where I am. I have lost almost 60 pounds and gained the courage to chase my dreams. I have more energy, I have a desire to LIVE and share life. I pray that my story and my journey encourages and inspires others to live.  My journey wasn't always easy and at times the scale went the wrong direction. However, I didn't give up and I'm not going to give up.

2012 was incredible and I can hardly wait to see what 2013 has in store for me!

What are some of the highlights of 2012 for you?

The Eve of Christmas Eve

The Eve of Christmas Eve (12/23) is my most favorite day of the year. It is the very last day before Christmas happens!

It is the day you rush to the store for last minute groceries, you scrub your home from top to bottom and you prepare for Christmas.

When I was younger it was the day my mom wrapped the gifts! I used to try my very best to peak under the door to see what she was wrapping. It was truly a special day. As I've grown older 12/23 still holds the same special place in my heart.

This year my special holiday fell on a Sunday. What more perfect way to prepare for Christmas than to be with your church family? Not only did I prepare my home for the celebration of Christ's birth, I was reminded of the mission of Christ. How He came to bring me (and YOU) the gift of life. How he came to seek and to save that which are lost.

I spent most of the day humming Christmas Carols as I cleaned and prepped for my very first Jimenez Family Christmas Eve Brunch (total success by the way).

In the evening my church family went out to a neighborhood and sang Christmas Carols. My heart melted as I watched people tear up, sing along and even join us as we walked home to home. What was more beautiful than all of that was the sound of the children singing "away in a manger" and the chorus to "Angels we have heard on high" at the very tippy top of their lungs. It was both hilarious and adorable. I counted myself blessed to have the opportunity to sing along with them.

12/23 was jam packed full of joy. After ALL of those adventures we hosted a movie night in our home (and I painted my nails!).

It's 11:20 on Christmas Day, and by now most of you have already opened your gifts and shared so many special moments with your families. You have done your best to help your children build lasting memories and perhaps established a few more Christmas traditions. However, I pray that in the midst of all of that, WE have not lost sight of the true meaning and gift of Christmas.

Cherish your family and spread joy and the good news with those around you.

From my family to yours, I wish you a Joyous Christmas.

A Sporty Little Christmas - Heather

Surprise! There is one more Girls Gone Sporty Ambassador for me to feature!

www.runstylish.com
What is your favorite sport?
I am a runner. I started running when I was 9 years old with my mom. She was training for a 5 mile race.

What is your favorite race distance and why?
My favorite distance is probably the half marathon. I say this just after a year of non-stop training for marathons. Half marathons sound great right now! I love half marathons for a ton of reasons. I love a good long weekend run, so I'm always within reach of the distance. Also, it is long enough so you don't have to run it in a full sprint. One of the best reasons to run half's is because you aren't totally exhausted after the race or during the training. Yep, half marathons are great!

How long have you been running?
Since I was 9.

What advice would you give to someone who has never won a race?
I would give them a little warning that they will love the energy at the race. They will be hooked. Running is an amazing sport. It has so much to offer. When you are running your first race make sure not to put too much pressure on yourself and enjoy the race. The more I run the more I learn it is all about the journey.

What is your favorite race memory?
Last year I qualified for the Boston Marathon after a really difficult two weeks. I had an emergency appendectomy 13 days before my qualifying race. If that wasn't bad enough my youngest daughter was hospitalized the day I returned home from the hospital.

My hubby was also attempting to qualify for Boston and my mom flew out to run the half. Needless to say, as I came down to the finishing line knowing I qualified after the hardest race of my life to find that my hubby had... I've never felt anything like it.

What are you most thankful for this Holiday Season?
My family, friends and health. I am beyond thankful for my hubby and girls.

A Sporty Little Christmas - Jen

Happy December 20th, 2012!

Today is my 4th wedding anniversary! I'm kind of of a nerd (if you read my blog, or know me personally... you already knew that). I got married on 12/20 AT 12:20. ... haha Yes, I thought  think that's pretty cool. I'm so blessed to be the wife of Christopher. He is and always has been my #1 fan. He is [literally] my BEST  friend in the world. (Sorry, I've been watching a lot of Parks and Rec lately ... haha)

Chris, thank you for being the best husband ever. I'm so thankful for our friendship.

Not only is today my anniversary it is ALSO our last GGSA spotlight.  I hope you enjoyed learning about Girls Gone Sporty and the Ambassadors.

In an effort to stop the sentimental "I love my husband" post I will NOW introduce you to Jen!

http://www.runnershoe.blogspot.com

What is your favorite sport?
Running: I love the flexibility of the sport, I can head out on stress relief run for alone time or grab some friends for a social run. Hills, speed, long distance there is always something different to focus on. I love being outside and getting lost in the world around.

What is your favorite race distance and why?
It depends on the day but either half or full marathon. I love the distance and time spend training to de-stress and focus on me. I feel so accomplished afterwards and love being out on the course running with so many other people. Standing at the start line of a marathon is so invigorating and such an accomplishment in itself and then knowing what has been achieved to cross the finish line makes me feel great!

How long have you been running?
11 years

What advice would you give to someone who has never run a race?
Do it! The races is the peak of your training and the reward for all the hard work. Until you have stepped foot on the start line and crossed the finish line you will never know the amazing feeling and emotions that arise. Grab some friends, find a fun race or one supporting a cause you believe in, find a training plan and reward yourself along the way.

http://www.runnershoe.blogspot.com

What is your favorite race memory?
8 months after my daughter was born I ran my best marathon up until that time, a 13 minute PR and my first Boston Qualifying time. It was such an emotional experience when I realized what I had finally achieved. As I crossed the finish line I was thinking of my daughter and how I was showing her what we can still accomplish as moms.

What is your favorite Holiday Movie?
The Grinch

What are you most thankful for this Holiday Season?
This year things are finally all falling into place so I have a lot to be thankful for: my family, good friends, a job I really like, my running ability and how I am the strongest and healthiest I have been in years.

A Sporty Little Christmas - Crystal

We have 2 more Girls Gone Sporty Ambassador's to feature as part of the 2012 Sporty Little Christmas! This has been SO fun!! (right!)

Be sure to check out Crystal's blog over at http://crystalfun2race.wordpress.com

What is your favorite sport?
My favorite sport is any in which I can stay active and have fun at the same time. Over the years I have played volleyball, softball, ran track, threw discus and shot put, held the school record for hammer throw, participated in show choir, won a women’s push up contest, bench pressed 3 sets of 15 at 185lbs, completed a century bike ride, represented the US for swimming in New Zealand and Australia, played on an all male water-polo team, ran some half marathons, 10ks, and 5ks, raced mountain bikes and cyclocross, competed in many disciplines of archery (compound, recurve and 3D), participated in triathlons, swam in a 2.4 mile race, and coached numerous athletes in a variety of disciplines.

What is your favorite race distance?
My favorite distance is definitely the half marathon with the 5k a close second. I like the half because I can do it with relatively little training, but it still feels like a big accomplishment each time I finish. The 5k on the other hand is a great race for having fun with friends, dressing up, or getting to be a part of someone's first ever race.

How long have you been running?
off and on since jr high track (about 16 years)

What advice would you give to someone who has never run a race before?
Start slow and have fun. Without one or the other, chances of failure (especially long term) are high.

What is your favorite race memory?
I did a breast cancer awareness 5k with my mother-in-law. Not only is she a breast cancer survivor, but this was her first race of her life. She has never been into fitness or working out, but she started walking almost daily and this race was the culmination. It was an awesome experience to see her face as she started to run with 100 yards left and we crossed the finish line together!

What are you most thankful for this Holiday Season?
This year I am most thankful for the communities I have in my life. Whether it be my family, my friends or random strangers online that have been brought together by shared goals, I feel very blessed to know that I have people to both motivate me when things are going well and support me when I am struggling. I am thankful that I have people close by that I can talk to and see in person, but I am also thankful for those that may be far in distance, but are close in heart!

What is your favorite Holiday Movie?
Any hallmark channel original movie...I am a sucker for all of them :)

A Sporty Little Christmas - Amalia

Today's Sporty Girl is Amalia. I met Amalia in Twitter this year and have really enjoyed reading her blog. Sooo, this is kinda funny. ... I'm sitting in Starbucks typing up this post and Amalia is a Barista for Starbucks! haha (Okay, maybe i'm the only one who thinks that's funny).

*awkward silence*

Amalia blogs over at http://livetraveleatandrun.com, she's a lot of fun to follow. - so DEFINITELY go check out her blog!

What is your favorite sport?
I don't know if I really have an answer to this! I love horseback riding, but I haven't been able to do it much since my really bad fall. Running is an obvious answer, but I also enjoy swimming! I love to watch hockey and football, but being uncoordinated means that I always mess up when playing it.
I really just enjoy having fun outdoors, and being sporty in general!

What is your favorite race distance and why?
The 5km is my favorite distance so far, but as a disclaimer, it's the only distance I've run! I will most likely be fast-walking my half marathon in January, since I've been sick and injured and haven't been able to train properly. Ask me again this time next year and I may have a different answer, as I hope to run 5km, 8km, 10km and a half marathon by that time!

How long have you been running?
3/14/12

What advice would you give to someone who has never run a race before?
If you want to, just do it. I hate to quote the Nike slogan but its true. You can easily walk a 5km race in your community! The sense of friendship and fun local races provide is a huge boost to training.

Don't be intimidated by the people who move faster than you. The more you run the more you realize its really just a race against yourself every time. Eat a bagel and head out the door!

What is your favorite race memory?
Having Manfriend (my boyfriend, for those of you who aren't readers of my blog) and my Mom at the finish line. I have this dream of having my whole family with me one day when I race, especially my Dad. It was fantastic to have them there to take my picture as I PR'ed. The looks on their faces were amazing! Especially when my Mom went "YOU BEAT YOUR TIME" and I went, "I KNOW!!!" And hugs and stuff. I'm one lucky girl.
What is your favorite Holiday Movie?
A Charlie Brown Christmas

What are you most thankful for this Holiday Season?
2011 was a sucky year. I'm thankful that I was able to get it together and turn it around. I love myself, my life in Vancouver, Manfriend and my family. I enjoy both my jobs, and I'm very lucky to be where I am.

So I'm thankful I took the time to really discover more about me. I'm thankful I took a risk and moved to Vancouver because it has made a huge difference in my life. And I'm thankful for my incredibly supportive friends, family, and for Manfriend.

Thanks for the question Erin, because I really realized how much I have to be thankful for this year! <-- span="span" welcome="welcome" your="your">

A Sporty Little Christmas - Angela

I hope you are enjoying getting to know all these fabulous GGSA's much as I am! There is actually a whole website of them. I am only featuring a few, but honestly! If you love the stories I've shared so far you should check out the whole crew here

TODAY! You get to meet Angela!

Angela blogs over at http://www.solesisterontherun.com, go check it out!

What is your favorite sport?
To do: Running

What is your favorite race distance and why?
13.1. I am still not where I want to be pace-wise at this distance, it still scares me a little, and every race is a challenge for me. I work through a lot of mental blocks during those 13.1 miles and when I want to quit, push through. It gives me the strength I need for day to day life issues.

How long have you been running?
Since August 2010

What advice would you give you someone who has never run a race before?
Do NOT believe you can't do it, it's too far or too hard. You can do more than you believe you can. Also, trust your body and your training. It is so easy to get caught up with the event, those around and not pay attention to your body and pace which will tire you out quickly.

What is your favorite race memory?
Crossing the finish line at my first half marathon. At mile 11 I threw a mental hissy fit, was tired, didn't want to be running anymore, etc. I kept going, I was tired... but as I came into the finish, saw everyone cheering, saw that finish line, I felt amazing and strong and invincible. I was on a runner's high for days after that.

What is your favorite Holiday Movie?
Cartoon: How the Grinch Stole Christmas

What are you most thankful for this Holiday Season?
My health, my family, my dogs. This has been an amazing year for me. I did not 1 but 4 half marathons (2 more scheduled: Nov 18th and Dec 15th), celebrated my 1 year wedding anniversary, bought my first home. I am thankful for everything and everyone that got me here.

Inspirational Quote:
One of my best friend's told me "HOPE: Hang On, Pain Ends". I guess it isn't really inspirational, but I use it while racing, and it holds true in all areas of life. Every time I want to quit, think it's too hard, or something similar, I hear her telling me this. It gets me through everything.

A Sporty little Christmas - Tracey

Alright, let's be honest? How many of you have had a countdown to the big day in your home since Thanksgiving? (ahem...maybe it's just me!). Well, on the (who know's what) day of Christmas THIS blogger introduced you to Ms. Tracey who blogs over at www.aspirefitnessks.com.

Enjoy!

What's your favorite sport?
Tennis & Volleyball

If you are a runner, what is your favorite distance and why?
Not **really** a runner, but my favorite distance is 10k. After completing a half, my next race was a 10k, and it was the perfect distance! :)

How long have you been running?
Completed first 1/2 in 2009

What advice would you give to someone who has never run a race before?
Go easy on yourself. Take it slow. Don't be afraid or embarrassed to walk and run and slowly build to more running and less walking. It's a journey and some days will be really hard. But if you keep it up, you'll reach that goal.

What is your favorite race memory?
Seeing my family - four kids including my itty bitty 6 month old at the finish line at the half.

What is your favorite Holiday Movie?
A Christmas Story
What are you most thankful for this Holiday Season?
My family, my home, my wonderful & supportive husband who has been behind me 100% this year as I started my own personal training business.

A Sporty Little Christmas - Marielle

Girls Gone Sporty Ambassador Shout Out to Marielle of http://www.fitgirlprettyworld.com

What is your favorite Sport?
Well to play it would definitely be soccer....played it since I was 5. But to watch it would be football! (my husband would be so proud that I just said that)

If you are a runner, what is your favorite race distance and why?
Half Marathon for sure! (13.1). Its a challenging, but more simple to train for than a full. I so admire people that train for marathons, I did it once and was so happy to do it, but was also happy to have my life back. :)

How long have you been running?
Racing for 7 years

What is your favorite Holiday Movie?
National Lampoon's Christmas vacation

What advice would you give to someone who has never run a race before?
Start small and don't get overwhelmed and compare yourself to others. Run the race for you. Find a running buddy and sign up for a 5K together. It's always nice to have someone with you on race day. Listen to your body and just get out there and try. You will finish and you can do it.

What is your favorite race memory?
It was the last .2 miles of my first full marathon. I remember turning the corner and my legs felt like they weighed about 100 pounds, but seeing the finish line and my friends cheering for me gave me a boost of adrenaline to make it to the end without collapsing. Lol!

What are you most thankful for this Holiday Season?
As cliche' as it sounds, I'm thankful for my hubby, family, friends, and my job. It's the simple things that matter. I'm also excited that we will be able to spend Christmas and New Years in Seattle this year. Last year we were in Dallas with my hubby's family, and this year it's my turn! :)

When I first read Laura's name, I instantly thought of structures such as Buzz and Woody which then made me think of Disney World (which, of course, THEN made me want to go to Orlando!)

What advice would you give a reader who has never run a race before?
Train properly and keep pushing forward. Whether you think you can or you think you can't: you're right! Just believe in yourself and you will achieve your running goals!
