3 Tips for Making Healthy Choices during the Superbowl!

Flashback to 2013 Superbowl.

Superbowl Sunday is here. A day when even the most unlikely of viewers find themselves at parties watching "The Game". Obviously, there will be lots of food and laughter. There will be cheers, chants and screams - but will your healthy lifestyle be maintained?

I'm not a football fan (at all). Yes, I curl up on the couch in my Miami Dolphins gear each Sunday - but mostly because my husband is a huge Dolphins fan and he buys me Miami Dolphins gear! - but, I mostly watch the game so that I can spend time with my husband.

So, it shouldn't come as a surprise when I tell you that I am usually found in the kitchen or around the food chatting (a.k.a. eating) throughout the game.

Sound familiar?

Here are 3 strategies I use when at a party or event where I know I'll be tempted to indulge.

1) Don't deny yourself. - Yes, on my weight loss journey I have had to say goodbye to a lot of food that I genuinely enjoy (candy, chicken fingers, chips). BUT - you are at an event, you are with friends enjoying yourself. If you see something that you really want (chicken wings, chips, soda) then have some! Find a small plate, or a napkin and give yourself a small portion.

Warning - I used to struggle with guilt after eating something that I shouldn't have. Don't fall into that pit - just enjoy it, and make sure you get back out there tomorrow and go for a walk, or a run. Don't let your decision to enjoy some chicken wings while watching the game derail you from your exercise!

2) Drink Water! - Before filling a plate, I try to make sure I have a glass or two of water. It hydrates you, and helps you to feel fuller - which in turn will help you put smaller portions on your plate.

I also try to drink water exclusively - it helps cut down on extra calories.

3) Bring a Healthy Snack! - If you know you are going to be at a party, offer to bring something. That way, you have a healthy option. I like to bring Hummus and Vegetables.

Question: What are your plans for Superbowl Sunday, and how do you ensure you make healthy
 choices during the game?
